Ruggedized Hardware Update

Common Computing Environment Solution Meets Shock Standards

Nova Power Solutions, Sun Microsystems and 901D have teamed to develop the first COTS Common Computing Environment (CCE) solution to pass the rigorous requirements of MILSTD-901D criteria for Grade “A” heavyweight shock. The solution, based on the Sun Microsystems Advanced Telecommunications Architecture Netra CT900 chassis, was developed over the course of a year in close association with government and industry engineers. The Sun Netra CT900 chassis meets the Navy’s requirements for an open architecture computing environment that would enable the rapid, cost-effective upgrade and support of hardware and not be dependent on proprietary software. In addition to the Sun chassis and raid storage arrays, the integrated assembly contains two Nova Power Solutions NPS 2500- 54VDC UPS, and the entire assembly is housed in a 901D naval applications rack. This CCE allows for significantly higher computing densities in a reduced footprint. The 901D rack allows for a direct bolt in replacement of existing naval computing racks without hot work. The Nova NPS 2500- 54VDC rugged UPS provides higher levels of power efficiency than the AC UPS units that provide power to most naval computing racks today.

Enterprise-Grade Unit Supports UAV Flight Control

The MP1X17A rugged, enterprise-grade portable computer from Chassis Plans provides a 17-inch SXGA 1280-by-1024 LCD screen in a rugged aluminum alloy chassis. This is an ideal system for flight line test and measurement systems, UAV flight control, forensics and similar uses. The system is ruggedized with all-aluminum outer construction and an inner aluminum structural frame. Rubber bumpers are provided on all eight corners to help mitigate rough handling.

Provision is made for mounting a standard ATX motherboard with all seven card slot I/O externally accessible, as is the motherboard I/O plate. A card holddown system ensures that the cards stay seated in the motherboard connectors. Power is provided by a standard PS/2 style power supply, and AC and DC input supplies are available. The right side of the system provides two 5-1/4 inch drive bays, one 3-1/2 inch bay and a slim DVD drive. The 5-1/4 inch positions can be populated with either two or three hot-swap drive carriers. The MP1X17A is intended for rugged military applications where multi-screen display, available high performance motherboard features, and the ability to install standard I/O cards make the application not suitable for a laptop or single display portable system.

Full-Keyboard PC Supports High- Production Data Entry

The Allegro MX Field PC from Juniper Systems features Windows Mobile 6.1, IP67 rating, robust full keyboard, integrated Bluetooth Wireless Technology and Wi-Fi 802.11b/g option, long-term battery life and highly outdoor-visible display. Powered by an XScale core 624 MHz processor, the Allegro MX is an ideal solution for mobile GIS when running ESRI ArcPad or ArcGIS Mobile. Durable in extreme environments, the Allegro is the premier choice for those in need of a rugged field computer with a full keyboard. The full alphanumeric keyboard is especially designed for high-production data entry in the field. The keyboard features large keys that are color-coordinated by function. There are 12 function keys available as hot keys for application programs with a unique ability to also serve as Windows Mobile hot keys, enhancing user satisfaction in the field.

Clamshell Device Offers 3G Access in Harsh Environments

AT&T Mobility and Motorola have unveiled Motorola Tundra VA76r, a rugged 3G clamshell device with a tough exterior that can withstand harsh environments. Tundra combines uncompromised call quality, optional work force management tools, navigation capabilities, access to the Web on the nation’s fastest 3G network and AT&T Mobility’s Push to Talk service. Tundra is designed to withstand the most strenuous conditions, meeting 810F military specifications for drop, dust, vibration, humidity, severe temperatures and rain. Tundra provides exceptional usability with unique features designed for work force management, such as voice activation, phone book locking for call restrictions, a rugged antenna and keys that can be easily pressed while wearing gloves. ♦
