Commercial Off-the-Shelf Technology

Networking Waveform Starter Kit Aids Radio Development

Spectrum Signal Processing by Vecima, a provider of software-defined radio (SDR) technology, and L-3 Communications Nova Engineering have announced the availability of the Wideband Networking Waveform (WNW) Starter Kit, based on Spectrum’s flexComm SDR-4000 rugged wireless modem. This Starter Kit offering dramatically simplifies the purchasing process for radio development engineers. Spectrum combines the only commercial-off-the-shelf SDR platform available with the WNW Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) physical layer (PHY), with a licensing and development package that offers significant cost savings. Further, when migrating from lab to full deployment, customers can continue to use the same robust WNW OFDM PHY running on the production-ready SDR-4000 modem platform, with a straightforward software license upgrade. The SDR-4000 wireless modem is 3U in size, based on the CompactPCI specification and is available in both air-cooled and rugged conduction-cooled versions. The “IF to Ethernet” modem architecture consists of software reconfigurable processor technology combined into an integrated package that is size, weight and power optimized for deployment in harsh environments and where power is limited. The Starter Kit adds a complete SDR development environment and the WNW OFDM PHY implementation. The kit also comes with comprehensive training and support, along with a complimentary day of consultation with L-3 Nova, a leader in waveform development.

Video Processor Captures Segments from Remote Locations

The Falcon Watch RF-5408-VP Remote Video Processor from Harris is an easy-to-deploy system for capturing video segments from remote locations. The Remote Video Processor broadens the capability of the Harris Falcon Watch Remote Surveillance System to provide timely, actionable intelligence that enhances real-time decision-making. The Falcon Watch Remote Video Processor is a covert unattended system combining an NTSC or PAL video camera and Falcon Watch frame processing capability with a digital video recorder (DVR). The DVR will record a video segment whenever it is cued by a Falcon Watch unattended ground sensor monitoring a specific area of interest. The system automatically transmits high-value still imagery through the Falcon Watch RF-5405V-GW Intelligent Gateway so that the imagery can be monitored at a command center. The Falcon Watch Remote Video Processor, like other components of the Falcon Watch system, is designed to operate in harsh environments for lengthy periods of time. Retrieved video is viewed at the Falcon Watch RF-5410 Sensor Management Application running on a laptop in the field or at the intelligence center.
