INDUSTRY INTERVIEW

Mardi Norman
President and Chief Executive Officer
Dynamic Systems

Q: Can you tell us about Dynamic Systems, and what makes it stand out from other firms in its field?

A: Dynamic Systems designs and implements customized solutions to make everyday data management simple. In short, we move, manage and protect our customer’s valuable data across the enterprise. Since 1991, we have garnered a solid reputation in the government and education markets as IT experts. We go beyond the role of technology implementer and act as a mentor and trainer for our customers. What sets Dynamic Systems apart from other systems providers is our team and our focus on providing superior customer service.

We have built a phenomenal base of products that we represent. We take these best-of-breed technologies and integrate them to build solutions for our customers. We look at ourselves as a boutique shop that is highly focused on addressing complex data center environments. We don’t try to be everything to everyone.

Q: What types of work do you do for government and military customers?

A: In addition to assessing, designing, procuring and implementing server and storage management infrastructures, Dynamic Systems provides education training for successful knowledge transfer. We are advisers to our customers, talking to them about their needs and helping solve their business problems through technology.

The company takes a personalized approach to addressing the common data center issues of server sprawl, data proliferation, inoperability and security risks. Through our professional services, DoD TS facility clearance, contract management center system, asset tagging/tracking and customized product deployment, Dynamic Systems goes beyond selling products and adds true value to the solution sale.

Dynamic Systems is classified as a small, minority-owned business—we’re an 8(a)—and we have a number of contract vehicles that our customers can use to help in the procurement cycle. We have received the Award of Excellence by the U.S. Small Business Administration for outstanding contributions and service to the nation by a small business.

Q. What products and services do you provide through the Sun Support Total Enterprise Warranty [SSTEW] ESA and what is your relationship to Sun Microsystems?

A: Dynamic Systems recently celebrated five years as the vendor of choice for the Department of Defense ESI agreement, SSTEW. Since June 2002, the company has been providing hardware maintenance and support and software support and licensing of Sun Microsystems products under a unique volume purchase agreement known as SSTEW ESA.

SSTEW is a powerful contract vehicle that has helped the DoD agencies save millions of dollars since its introduction five years ago. Our goal is the same now as then, to enable agencies to achieve cost efficiencies by making it easy to track, consolidate and maintain their technology assets. An additional service provided to all SSTEW customers is asset management and tracking. A customer can view, at the serial number level, all the information about that piece of equipment—when it was purchased, contract term dates, level of support, EOSL date, host ID, location, funding mechanism, etc. It’s a lot of detailed information about that serial number, and our customers are using it to help manage their technology assets.

We’ve been a Sun partner since 1993, and are classified as an executive-level partner with the highest levels of Sun certification. All of our team, both on the sales and engineering side, are Sun certified, along with other key products and software.

Q: You mentioned asset tracking. Are you involved with the evolving DoD UID and RFID requirements?

A: There are now mandates from DoD for unique item identifier [UID] and asset tracking. We provide solutions that track and report on government furnished property though UID and radio frequency identification [RFID] functionality, with WAWF and UID registry submission capabilities.

Furthering our asset tracking capabilities through RFID and providing real-time asset tracking enhances the services provided on our primary contract, SSTEW; the vehicle focused on support, maintenance and asset management for DoD customers. Tracking static assets is one thing, but to be able to actively track property through the use of RFID and know where that asset is located, as it’s moving, brings it to a whole new level.

Q: Are you planning any new directions or enhanced services for the defense market in the future?

A: Our customers have larger data requirements than ever before. More data equals larger system and storage requirements, which leads to larger footprints in the data center. Large physical space requirements are not monetarily or ecologically friendly. ECO, as in both ecology and economics is the wave of the future. Our goal is to help our customers utilize technology to save money, energy and space and all the while not compromise compute capacity or security.

We work with our customers to optimize their infrastructure. We specialize in increasing compute power, utilization and storage capacity, while reducing the number of servers and storage devices. The technology is there; it is just a matter of education and implementation.
