The completely fanless Kontron Micro Client II Panel PCs are now available with a 1.6 GHz Intel Atom N270 processor in four screen sizes from 7 to 15 inches. They can serve as a universal human machine interface for various visualization tasks. The IP65-protected Kontron Micro Client IIA Panel PCs with resistive touch screens are designed for the control and monitoring of equipment, machinery and plants. They support all current thin client concepts from Remote Desktop Protocol for Microsoft Windows-based servers, to Linux based open platforms with browser based Java clients. Operators benefit from such concepts through the open and runtime license-free access to both centralized and decentralized (Web) server applications. Kontron’s latest panel PCs can also be used for several visualization tasks without requiring any application-specific software to be installed on the client. The Kontron Micro Clients IIA feature not only SATA and CompactFlash boot functionality, but can also be remotely booted via Ethernet.

Airborne Surveillance Program Orders Rugged Workstations
Z Microsystems has received a $2 million order for rugged, high-performance workstations and data storage for a forward deployed airborne surveillance program used for tactical intelligence missions. The program involves the collection of data by sensor-equipped aircraft. Workstations and data storage equipment supplied by Z Microsystems will support tactical intelligence collection, which includes facilitating accurate weapon targeting and identifying improvised explosive devices. The military program is implementing Z Microsystems’ ZXL2 workstations and TranzPak 7 data storage devices. The ZXL2 workstation is a low profile, rack mountable system with high-performance computing and graphics processing capabilities. The compact system is 3.45 inches (2U) high by 20 inches deep and supports up to three rugged hot-pluggable, removable drives, a slim-line DVD-RW and a slim-line floppy drive. User-friendly features include a front accessible power switch, two front accessible USB ports for rapid connectivity, and a quickrelease top access cover for ease of service and hardware installation. Optimized for rugged conditions, the ZXL2 hosts innovative PCI card hold–down brackets that secure cards in all three axes.

Single Board Computer Supports Interoperability Specification
Curtiss-Wright Controls Embedded Computing has introduced the VPX3-129, a new rugged Power Architecture-based 3U VPX (VITA 46) single board computer (SBC). This powerful, small form-factor SBC augments the performance and advanced I/O capabilities of Freescale’s QorIQ P4080 eight-core communications processor with an extensive I/O complement to provide a highly capable 3U VPX SBC. Designed to support the new OpenVPX system interoperability specification for VPX, the VPX3-129 is ideal for a wide range of embedded commercial and military/ aerospace applications including tactical aircraft, armored vehicles or rugged naval systems. To satisfy space, weight and power-constrained applications, the VPX3-129 is designed to optimize functionality, reduce power dissipation and maximize system flexibility. Its integral high-speed VPX backplane and XMC mezzanine connectivity enables multi-GB/s data flows from board-to-board via the backplane, and from the backplane to the XMC site, to support the acquisition, processing, and distribution of high-bandwidth sensor input such as video, radar and sonar data.
