Ensuring Access to the GIG

DISA CONUS GLOBAL NETOPS SUPPORT
CENTER ENSURES THAT CUSTOMERS AT
FACILITIES AROUND THE WORLD HAVE ACCESS
TO THE GLOBAL INFORMATION GRID.
DISA CONUS serves as an integral part of the Joint Task Force-Global Network Operations (JTF-GNO) team and the Department of Defense by ensuring access to the Global Information Grid (GIG) through the Defense Information Systems Network (DISN). DISA CONUS was formerly known as the DISN Service Center (DSC) and the CONUS Regional Network Operations and Security Center (RNOSC).
The DSC and RNOSC were unified under one joint table of distribution in October 2003, and are now known as the DISA CONUS Field Command. The DISA CONUS Field Command is the home of the Global NetOps Support Center (GNSC), which operates the CONUS and intertheater portions of the GIG in support of JTF-GNO and supports the CONUS Theater Information Grid.
Located at Scott AFB, Ill., this group of more than 650 highly dedicated military, civilian and defense contractor professionals works 24/7 to ensure that customers at every Air Force base, Army post, Marine camp, naval station and defense agency or facility around the world have access to the GIG for their command and control direct operational support, and operational service support, telecommunications, information and technology services.
This access to the GIG is provided via the networks and technologies that make up the DISN backbone, such as NIPRNet, SIPRNet, DRSN, DSN, DMS, ATM, IDNX, SONET and GIG-BE. GIG access is essential because, in most cases, “red” or “black” e-mails, DSN phone calls, DRSN phone calls, video teleconferences and C2 systems connectivity must ride a combination of DISN networks in order to get from one government facility to another.
DISA CONUS is an ISO 9001-certified joint service organization that provides global net-centric solutions for the nation’s warfighters in two interdependent ways.
First, DISA CONUS plans, provisions, engineers, implements and fields long-haul telecommunications requirements and provides information-assurance services for more than 60 percent of the DISN backbone. This accounts for approximately two-thirds of the over 60,000 Command Communications Service Designators in the World Wide On-Line System database.
Second, DISA CONUS’s GNSC provides the day-to-day direction, technical operation, defense, control and management of more than 60 percent of the GIG that supports global ops. This includes all of the DISN backbone in the CONUS as well as all DISN connectivity that links the CONUS with the Europe, Pacific and Southwest Asia regions.
Over the years, DISA CONUS has evolved into the single point of contact for all CONUS customers. Those customers include all combatant commands, services and agencies. As technology advances and networks expand, so does the essential role of DISA CONUS.
The DISA CONUS mission continues to advance as rapidly as the technology that supports requirements of the warfighter. DISA CONUS takes great pride in being known as the NetOps technical center of excellence within DISA and throughout DoD. ♦
