Drawing inspiration from aircraft design, the HP EliteBook 8540w and HP EliteBook 8440w are engineered to meet the tough MIL-STD 810G military-standard tests for vibration, dust, humidity, altitude, and high and low temperatures. The sleek, gunmetal anodized-aluminum finish complements a full magnesium alloy chassis to create an incredibly strong case that protects the top and bottom of the notebook against rigorous use. Anodized aluminum is used on the palm rest area and display cover, bringing significant scratch-resistance improvements, including the HP DuraFinish coating for six times more scratch-resistance than current notebooks, while metal alloy hinges with hardened steel pin axels are designed to withstand extensive use. Both the HP EliteBook 8540w and HP EliteBook 8440w include an LED-backlit, anti-glare high-definition display at 15 inches and 14 inches diagonal, respectively. They both feature NVIDIA discrete graphics with ISV certifications and choice of Intel Core i7 or future Intel Core processors with Turbo Boost and vPro technology. The HP EliteBook 8440w is designed for photographers, power users, developers and designers who need entrylevel workstation graphics. The HP EliteBook 8540w runs demanding applications and helps users to experience faster rendering capabilities with next-generation graphics, fast hard drives and support for up to 16 gigabytes of memory.
Box PC Combines Fanless Design, Superior Thermal Protection
The UNO-3272 from the Industrial Automation Group of Advantech is a fanless box PC equipped with a Celeron M 440 1.86GHz CPU, 1 GB DDR2 SDRAM, 2 x Gigabit Ethernet ports with teaming function, 4 x serial communication ports, 2 x PCI expansion slots, audio, DVI-D, VGA dual video output and 1 x external CompactFlash slot. The UNO-3272 supports SATA RAID 0/1 function, allowing customers to back up their operating system, applications, and important data if they have installed two hard drives. A Gigabit LAN port supports teaming function with fault tolerance, link aggregation, and load balance features. Also, the UNO-3272 supports Windows 2000/XP/Vista, Linux or Embedded OS such as Windows XP Embedded and Embedded Linux. The UNO-3272 provides high performance, multiple I/O interfaces, PCI and multimedia expansion, with a fanless design and thermal protection for harsh environments, making it a cost-effective, high performance fanless box PC for many different applications.
Tactical Server Units Picked for UAV Control
DuraCOR 810 mission computers from Parvus have been integrated into Northrop Grumman’s MQ-5B Hunter UAV. More than 40 DuraCOR 810 subsystems have been delivered to subcontractor Melhcorp and configured to operate as the payload interface unit for the Hunter UAV. These DuraCOR 810 units monitor, control and communicate between payloads onboard the Hunter, as well as control the mounted payloads that include electronics and sensors. Currently being deployed by the Army, the MQ-5B Hunter UAS conducts battlefield surveillance using its multimission optronic payload. Flying over the battlefield, it gathers reconnaissance, surveillance, target acquisition and battle damage information in real time. The Hunter then relays this information via video link to commanders and soldiers on the ground. Melhcorp chose the Parvus unit for the Hunter program because of its rugged modularity and MIL-STD-810F environmental compliance for extreme temperatures, shock/vibration, and ingress. This COTS tactical computer server integrates a lowpower Intel Pentium M CPU together with a MIL-STD-704/1275 power supply in a rugged aluminum chassis with MIL-DTL-38999 connectors. Up to 6 spare PC/104(+) slots are available for integrators or Parvus to integrate mission-specific I/O functionality.
Desktop Hard Drive Built to Withstand Building Collapse
The new ioSafe Solo SSD is a solid state, highly ruggedized model of the award-winning ioSafe Solo desktop external hard drive. Combining ioSafe’s new proprietary ArmorPlate, a military grade steel outer casing with SSD technology, the new ioSafe Solo SSD adds unprecedented shock, drop and crush protection to the existing fire and water protection. The ioSafe Solo SSD combined with ArmorPlate helps to protect data in a two story building collapse, 5000 lb. crush forces, 20’ drop into rubble and up to a 1000g shock. In addition, the original HydroSafe, FloSafe and DataCast work to keep the drive cool during normal operation and protect the data from fires up to 1550°F for 1/2 hour and complete water submersion of 30’ for 30 days in fresh or salt water. ♦
